Upcycled “Godnat” (Goodnight) Teddy Bear Sleep Shirt Dress – Handmade from a Vintage Children’s Duvet Cover
Description
A playful one-of-a-kind sleep shirt dress made from a vintage children’s duvet cover featuring two teddy bears, a moon, clouds, stars and musical details.
Across the chest, the word “Godnat”—Danish for goodnight—has been incorporated as part of the original textile design, giving the piece a nostalgic bedtime-story feel. The dress has a relaxed straight silhouette, short sleeves and a softly squared neckline finished with yellow binding.
Because I work only with second-hand and reclaimed materials, I often have to design around the exact amount available. On this piece, the yellow edging changes briefly in one small area at the back because there was not enough of the original trim to finish the entire neckline. I used another salvaged material for the remaining section rather than replacing everything, so the small variation has been kept as an honest part of the garment’s handmade story.
The result is a comfortable, whimsical piece that can be worn as a nightdress, lounge dress, oversized sleep shirt or playful casual mini dress.
